The Business Challenge:
When Richard Bollinger, Technology Manager-Corporate IT for the Elliott Group, and his team wanted to simplify and improve the disaster recovery process for two of the company’s data centers, they considered several network providers.
Their disaster recovery process involved backing up data from each data center to tapes, but this meant employees had to purchase tapes, monitor the procedure, and then arrange for the tapes to be transported to a secure, offsite location. “We knew this process could be automated, which would save us time and money, and provide an even more secure process,” Bollinger said. “Only one of the network companies offered a cost-effective solution that provided reasonable recovery time and recovery point objectives for our disaster recovery process.”
The Comcast Business Solutions
The Comcast Business Ethernet Network Service solved the Elliott Group’s disaster recovery issue. Now Bollinger and his team use virtual local area network (VLAN) trunking via the network to transfer backed up data from the main data center to the recovery data center, rather than making tapes and transporting them. “Not only can we transfer data much faster, more efficiently, and more securely than before, we also rely on Comcast for operational flexibility. We move computing resources between sites without disrupting the system or affecting users,” he said.
For example, when Bollinger needs to rebuild a server at the main data center, he relies on that server’s replica at the recovery site to maintain operations. “Without Comcast Business Ethernet Network Service, our employees wouldn’t be able to access the applications they need until the server had been rebuilt. That could take hours and would be a major disruption to productivity.”
The Elliott Group also relies on the Comcast Business Ethernet Dedicated Internet Service for scalable, high-speed Internet access. “We have multiple remote sites on an Internet virtual private network (VPN), which requires a good deal of bandwidth,” Bollinger explained. “But that’s no problem for Comcast. Bandwidth is consistently available and scalable.”
The Elliott Group also utilizes the Comcast Business Ethernet Dedicated Internet Service to separates business communications. “Through one connection, we provide Internet access for visitors and separate Internet access for employees. It’s important to separate VPNs from Internet browsing for security purposes,” he added.
Streamlines and Improves Disaster Recovery Process
The Comcast Business Ethernet Network Service transports backed up data between data centers more quickly, securely, and cost-effectively than the Elliott Group’s previous disaster recovery process.
Provides Optimum Operational Flexibility
The Elliott Group also uses the Comcast Business Ethernet Network Service to move resources between sites swiftly. Bollinger and his team use the replica server at the disaster recovery data center when they need to work on the original server at the production datacenter.
Ensures Scalable Bandwidth and Segments Business Communications
The Comcast Business Ethernet Dedicated Internet Service provides the Elliott Group with scalable bandwidth for high-speed Internet access, especially for VPNs. It also enables the company to separate business communications for security purposes. Through one connection, the company provides separate Internet access for visitors and employees.
“If we hadn’t implemented the Comcast Business Ethernet Network Service, our disaster recovery process wouldn’t be what it is today—fast and secure. Instead, it would be more costly and provide less protection of corporate data.”
