Stockton College and Atlantic Cape Community College Connect Multiple Campuses and Bring Faster, More Reliable Internet Service to 15,900 Students
Atlantic City, NJ – December 12, 2012
– Comcast Corporation, one of the nation's leading providers of information and communications products and services, today announced that it is delivering Ethernet services
to both The Richard Stockton College
of New Jersey and Atlantic Cape Community College
, two of southern New Jersey’s most well-known educational institutions. This agreement will bring high-performance Internet to more than 15,900 students across the region for a variety of different applications, ranging from Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and cloud computing to faster Web browsing.
As the second-oldest community college in New Jersey, Atlantic Cape Community College
serves more than 7,500 students and 400 faculty and staff members across both Atlantic and Cape May counties. Its main campus is located in Mays Landing, with two branch campuses in Atlantic City and Cape May Court House. The college depends on its Internet connection for both instructional resources and reliable access to Google Apps for Education, which is its primary communications tool for students, faculty, and staff, and encompasses everything from email, chat, and calendar access to document management.
At the same time, another local school was finding itself with similar needs. Stockton College
, the only four-year plus graduate degree program college in southern New Jersey, has ensured the latest on-campus technologies and services for its more than 8,400 students since it was first founded 40 years ago. The college had originally installed multiple T1 lines to provide Internet services to its main campus in Galloway, but soon realized that in order to offer an advanced technological environment for teaching and learning, a network infrastructure upgrade would be necessary.
“Over the past few years alone, we’ve added a brand new 150,000 square foot campus center, the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club, as well as four satellite learning centers, and have also seen steady growth in our student enrollment,” said Joseph Loefflad, director for networking and telecommunications services at Stockton College. “This meant that we needed to be on the cutting edge of technology to meet our faculty and students' growing technological needs, while also having the flexibility to quickly and efficiently connect remote locations to our main campus."
Both Stockton College and Atlantic Cape approached Comcast for a solution, which came in the form of an Ethernet Private Line
(EPL) for Stockton College that connected its main campus to its satellite learning centers. It also installed a Comcast Ethernet Dedicated Internet
(EDI) line that provided 500 Mbps of bandwidth, which – in addition to its standard benefits for email access and faster Web browsing – is currently also being used to transfer security camera footage from each of the school’s locations to the college’s campus police department in real time. The resiliency of Comcast’s high-performance network enables this important video footage to be delivered with maximum performance and minimal latency.
Atlantic Cape also uses Comcast’s EPL services to now connect its main campus and branch campus locations. In addition to drastically increasing the speed and reliability of those between-campus connections, this gigabit-level service enhances many of Atlantic Cape’s academic programs.
“We offer video classes for some of our students who may not be able to travel to our main campus, so it’s extremely important to us that all of them feel as if they’re right next door to each other, regardless of whether they’re in Mays Landing or one of our other locations 45 miles away,” said Douglas Hedges, dean of information technology services for Atlantic Cape.
In addition to these benefits for video classes, nursing students can now also utilize the school’s video system even when they are not on campus. This allows them to receive instruction in real-time with students in Mays Landing, which is an added convenience not previously available.
“The idea of a ‘borderless classroom’ has emerged over the past few years, with more and more schools coming to Comcast to ensure that students can access educational resources and collaborate with teachers and their peers, regardless of where they are physically located,” said Michael Maloney, vice president of Comcast Business Services, Freedom Region. “These deployments also underscore the diversity of traffic now being supported on college networks, from cloud-based applications and Internet access for tablets, smartphones and other mobile devices, to real-time security video that keeps campuses safer."
