More veterans are choosing farming as their post-military service career path. This surprised me a bit, but when you think about it, farming is a great new career opportunity for military vets! Why? Because, according to the Farmer Veteran Coalition (FVC), “veterans possess the unique skills and character needed to strengthen rural communities and create sustainable food systems, which offers them purpose, opportunity and physical and psychological benefits.” In fact, farming helps over 250 veterans each month find an agriculture career.
The Farmer Veteran Coalition (FVC) is cultivating a new generation of farmers that develop meaningful careers through the collaboration of the farming and military communities, with help from two of its key programs: Homegrown by Heroes and The Farmer Veteran Fellowship Fund.
Homegrown by Heroes (HBH) is the official veteran branding program for farmers, ranchers and fishermen. The HBH logo serves to inform consumers that products with the logo were produced by military veterans—a great marketing advantage!
While Homegrown by Heroes helps veterans after they’ve established themselves in farming, The Farmer Veteran Fellowship Fund helps veterans get their farming careers started. If you are interested in exploring farming as a career option, be sure to check out this program. In addition to the monetary support, it provides guidance in production, business planning, and marketing.
